Summary/Abstract: Rural areas are different to other areas in terms of some socio-economic indicators, including structural indicators. In rural areas the income per one person and professional activity indicators for women are lower, service sector is less developed, general education level is usually lower, and a small number of households have an access to broadband Internet. In some rural regions the major problems are distance and peripherality. Lack of job opportunities, contacts and developed training infrastructure cause a problem especially for women and young people in distant rural areas. The article describes the Leader program and its role in attaining the sustainable growth in rural areas in Western Pomerania.
