Summary/Abstract: The postulate of sustainable development implies such an approach to planning and decision-making process that it leads to the achievement of the real and permanent reduction of social and economic diversities, satisfies the current needs without minimizing the ability to meet the needs of future generations and at the same time provides the society with a long-term vision of development. Today, more than ever there is a tremendous need for commitment to the development promoting social inclusion and sustainable development, focusing on the development of low emission economy and attaching high priority to the reduction of poverty and inequality. The economic crisis can be an opportunity to elaborate a new development policy that will promote more sustainable growth and social inclusion. The purpose of this work is to extend knowledge about the consequences of financial and economic crisis to implement the idea of sustainable development in the social context, based on selected European Union countries.
