Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author addresses the issue of compulsory voting, i.e. the electoral system in which voters are obliged by law to participate in elections. The first section provides a brief history of compulsory voting (incorporating geographical factor as well), particularly the rationale and justification for the introduction of the compulsory voting. The second section discusses selected issues related to regulations and functioning of the compulsory voting system, such as exemptions, measures of enforcement, sanctions for non-participation and their impact on electoral turnout. The final section examines the arguments for and against compulsory voting.
