Summary/Abstract: During 70 years of existence of Vilnius Pedagogical University three significant periods shall be distinguished. The first period – since its establishment in 1935 until 1943. This is the period of Pedagogical Institute of the Republic being the first higher pedagogical school. During this period the Institute has educated over 500 primary school teachers of high qualification. In 1943 the Institute was closed by Nazis. In 1944 the Institute was reestablished and named Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute. The period between 1944 and 1990 marks another period of the development of the university. During this period around 37 thousand graduates have finished the Institute. They composed about half of the total number of education employees of the Republic. During this period education of teachers was restricted by sovietization and politization. 1990–2005 is the third period of the history of the University. In 1992 the Institute was granted a status of the university. It has already trained about 17,8 thousand graduates with the bachelor's degree and over 3000 graduates with the master's degree. They represent the most mature potential of Lithuanian education system of first half of the XXI century. Professors of the University have significantly contributed to the science of the Republic of Lithuania.
