Summary/Abstract: At first new changes, corrections and additions included in the partly appended and revised second edition of Pravidlá slovenského pravopisu (The Rules of the Slovak Orthography) from 1998 in comparison with the first edition from 1991 are briefly presented and commented. In the second and third chapters some general orthographic problems are revolved. It involves mainly writing foreign and loan words and writing words with the capital and small first letter. Writing multi-word names representing streets, embankments, squares, gardens etc. is explained from the onomasiological and communication aspects. Attitude to different solutions in the Slovak and Czech orthography is presented. Referring to new orthographic modifications in Czech and German a new question of liberating of the direct-orthographic obligation (usually through variations) is interpreted. Theoretical basis of the orthographic rules (or recommendations) must regard the needs of stylistically differential writing communication.
