Metaphor at the Semantics/ Pragmatics Borderline

Summary/Abstract: Off and on the study of metaphor has been granted centrality in a variety of fields, including philosophy, rhetoric, stylistics or linguistics. The present article proposes a review of the ways in which two branches of linguistics, namely semantics and pragmatics, have negotiated the centrality of metaphor by pushing the theoretical frameworks and practical language research to new limits. A reconciliation between these two perspectives is reckoned to be felicitous and able to cope with the challenges currently encountered by the study of metaphor.
