Summary/Abstract: The three critical interpretations of the story in question (proposed respectively by Frangeš, Pavletić, and Maleš), mutually consonant and implicitly consecrated as officially acceptable in Croatian contemporary literature, focus on the »voluminous«, »strong« and compact aspects of its original content. The present interpretative attempt, based on a narratological analysis, aims, for a change, to shed light upon the shadowed angles of The Angel, by giving consideration to its subsidences, to the reticences of the narrator’s authority and the protagonist’s focalization, i.e. to divergences between story and narration, to weak voices, repressed standpoints, flash-backs, abysmal accounts, referred utterances and retold dreams, insinuated into the breaches of the apparently self-evident text’s meaning. The resulting alternative reading tries to detect the ambiguous tracks of understanding performed by the ludicrous textual strategies of the short story, perceived as having at least two perlocutionary strings at its bow, the literal one and the one undermining the first one’s power of control and censure over the reading subject. The procedure of establishing multiple interpretative directions, hypothetically concealed as fictional understatements, lead to an exploration of the possibilities to point out some different, if not opposite text’s valorizations, bringing about important meta-aesthetic and political implications.
