Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the major trends in scholarship about the effects of early institutional care on social and emotional behavior, features of institutional care that contribute to developmental delays, and negative social or behavioral consequences for children raised in institutional care. I am specifically interested in how previous research investigated the effects of foster care as an intervention to address the effects of institutionalization, the relationship between child poverty and institutional care, and the need for early placement in home-based care for abandoned children.
