Summary/Abstract: The democratic West and the other cultural areas (Islam, Confucian & post-Confucian China, Buddhist India, Eastern Christianity) face a much more serious challenge than the current global financial and economic crisis: the new theological-political problem. It is different from the theological-political problem of the Middle Ages – separation State-Church. While in Europe, Machiavelli’s thought influenced the practice of State and Church separation, as Manent wrote, in the United States of America religion was the primary political institution, as Tocqueville explained. The new theological-political problem is a useful conceptual framework for disclosing Radical Evil. It explains the radical totalitarian experiments of the XXst Century (the Gulag & the Holocaust), but also the instabilities of the globalized world.
