Summary/Abstract: In an era of growing uncertainty and declining reliability of long-term planning, organisations are shifting from classic strategies to flexible substitutes. Timing strategies are gaining importance, offering an alternative to traditional approaches which have been used for years. Contemporary managerial decision-making is based on collaboration, intuition and ability to identify potential "here and now", particularly evident in culture and art institutions, which work out design-based dynamic solutions tailored to the current needs. Qualitative research conducted in these institutions enables the identification and exemplification of the time perspectives used in their operations as well as four timing strategies: chance-grasping strategy, chance-entraining strategy, chance-riding strategy and chance creating strategy. This article brings a new perspective to the discussion on strategy substitutes, indicating that time - along with resources, relationships and structure - can be a key factor in the strategic advantage, and that timing strategies have a significant practical dimension in the strategic management of contemporary organisations.
