Summary/Abstract: The article examines the complex relationship between Mircea Eliade and Ioan Petru Culianu through the lens of what may be called the latter’s cultural legacy. Culianu is known not only as Eliade’s disciple but also as the universal legatee of his literary estate, including his writings, manuscripts, and correspondence. A number of commentators have suggested that Culianu’s untimely death may have been connected to the troubling dimensions of the legacy he inherited from Eliade, who never disclosed to his disciple his youthful involvement with Romania’s Legionary Movement. Against this background, the article argues that inheritance may encompass not only benefits but also a curse. Depending on the weight or potential consequences of this curse, the benefits of a legacy become ambiguous, although they do not disappear, thereby revealing the paradoxical character of the symbolic goods transmitted from one generation to another.
