Summary/Abstract: This article discusses issues related to the role and significance of the native language and translation within the framework of leading foreign language teaching methods, as well as methods used for teaching Russian in Poland since the 1950s. The paper briefly examines the influence of major methodological trends on Russian language teaching methods in Poland. It also highlights contemporary methodological approaches that have set a new direction for translation (the action-oriented approach, the introduction of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, 2018). In the final part of the article, experimental research conducted among students of Russian philology is reported and discussed. Based on conclusions from the didactic experiment, we argue that translation exercises are an effective exercise in the teaching of Russian and help counteract the phenomenon of language interference.
