Summary/Abstract: Paganini’s first violin concerto in D major appears on the public stage usually accompanied by the (in)famous ‘Sauret’ cadenza. Although there are other noteworthy cadenzas for this concerto, there is a sort of monopoly of practice in regards to the ‘Sauret’ cadenza. One could also argue that there exists inherent difficulties in writing a cadenza for a very challenging concerto such as Paganini’s.In this paper, I will take a look at existing cadenzas and analyze the technical means used in the writing of these works, trying to answer the question of ‘How does one write a cadenza for a difficult concerto such as Paganini’s?’.
