Uneven preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Nessebar: impacts for tourism development

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the uneven preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Ancient city of Nessebar and its implications for the city’s tourism development as a historic and tourist destination. The study applies a qualitative case-study approach based on an interpretive analysis of historical, strategic, and analytical texts related to cultural heritage, its management, and its use in tourism. The core argument is that tangible heritage in Nessebar is more visible, more resilient, and more institutionally protected, while a substantial share of the intangible practices that historically shaped the urban environment have weakened, been transformed, or disappeared. Through examples such as Renaissance houses, windmills and fishing practices the paper identifies different patterns of preservation, loss, and adaptation. The findings indicate that this asymmetry creates a risk of reducing heritage to a visual and touristic resource detached from living practices and the local community. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for a more balanced approach that integrates tangible and intangible heritage into the sustainable development of tourism.
