Summary/Abstract: The opening of the exhibition Aestheticization of the Urban Environment – Sofia in the halls of the Union of Bulgarian Artists on April 19, 1978, was an event with a serious resonance in artistic life. The focus of the article is the analysis of the exhibition in the context of the time and its design. The broad scope in terms of thematic and genre aspects predisposes its study as an intersection where the interests of the authorities, artists, architects, art critics and the public meet. On the other hand, the event is part of the cultural policy implemented in the second half of the 1970s, which was strongly influenced by Lyudmila Zhivkova’s ideas about beauty in the living environment. Outlining the critical aspects along with the achievements that resonated in the public space, the article examines the exhibition Aestheticization of the Urban Environment – Sofia as an example of the contemporary rethinking of the overall state cultural policy during the socialist era.
