Summary/Abstract: The article examines the creation, organisation, and activities of the State Commission for Fine, Applied Arts and Architecture (SCFAA), through which the socialist government exercised control over the activities of Bulgarian artists and the aestheticisation of the urban environment from 1976 to 1991. The preserved archival documents and protocols from the activities of this public-state body shed light on significant and still unexplored problems related to the monumental-decorative arts, which are still part of the urban environment today.
