Summary/Abstract: Human trafficking is one of the most serious forms of organized crime globally, being considered a modern manifestation of slavery. The phenomenon has profound implications for fundamental human rights, with dramatic consequences for the victims – women, men and children – exploited for various purposes, from forced labor to sexual exploitation. This study presents a historical foray into the evolution of the concept of human trafficking, from the traditional slave trade to modern international and European regulations. It also analyzes the contributing causes, socio-economic circumstances, the profile of victims and traffickers, as well as the legal and practical aspects regarding the criminalization of the act in Romanian criminal law. The transnational nature of the crime and the concrete ways of committing it are highlighted, emphasizing the relevant doctrinal and jurisprudential interpretations.
