Summary/Abstract: Czech musician, theoretician, and composer Karel Macháň (1867 – ?1935) published his “Short Music Dictionary” in 1901, prepared in connection with his teaching activities in Bulgaria. The appearance of this guide, aimed at a wide range of readers – pedagogues, students, and amateur musicians, in which, for the first time, the specific vocabulary of Western European art music is systematised in Bulgarian, influences the processes in our music education and the formation of musical terminology in Bulgarian, and its thesaurus becomes a kind of model for some of the later editions – for example, the “Complete Music Dictionary” by Cyril M. Dzhokov from 1909. The study is part of a broader research on the music directories published in Bulgaria until the 1930s. It outlines and applies a specific method for analysing the vocabulary – classification of the groups of terms in accordance with the typical definition of the musical phenomenon for the period, as laid down in the musical pedagogical works of the Czech educator. The Thesaurus of the “Short Dictionary” contains a clear model that reflects the complex idea of music and its educational role and corresponds to the educational ideas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the process of classifying the terminological units, some of the alleged sources that Karel Macháň used in creating the edition were also revealed.
