Summary/Abstract: The population and housing census, conducted in December 1992, is the fifteenth general census in the history of Bulgaria and the first one after the democratic changes of November 10, 1989. It was scheduled by a decision of the National Assembly on May 26, 1992 and was conducted in the period from December 4 to 14, 1992.The census has an important historical significance, as it is carried out in the conditions of large-scale social and economic changes, covering the political, social, economic and demographic spheres. After the end of the one-party political system and the beginning of the transition to a market economy, the country experienced intensive processes of natural and mechanical population movement, accompanied by significant changes in socio-economic life. The census conducted on December 4, 1992 is a large-scale statistical project, which, for the first time after the political changes, provides an objective picture of the demographic, social and economic condition of Bulgarian society. The strict methodology, detailed instructions and multi-faceted information collected through the 19 questions in Map ‘N’ form a valuable source for scientific research, state planning and analysis of social processes in the transition period. The census data serve as a basis for developing policies in the fields of education, employment, housing, social assistance and regional development, while at the same time reflecting the new realities of multi-party democracy and a market economy.
