Summary/Abstract: The fourteenth Population and Housing Census was conducted between December 4 and December 12, 1985. Subject of this article is the census of the population and housing stock, as well as of the building stock. The censuses of the housing stock, which are carried out once every 10 years, are the only statistical surveys that provide comprehensive information on the number and composition of dwellings even in the smallest territorial-administrative units in our country and they provide an opportunity for a comprehensive determination of the housing conditions and material livelihoods of the population in our country. A large volume of information was collected as a result of the census conducted in 1985, giving the opportunity for various groupings in different sections, which can be used for the development of socioeconomic analyses of the well-being of the population, the need for living space and the improvement of the living conditions. The housing needs are determined primarily through indicators that give the so-called average characteristics: living space (sq. m) on average per person of the population, average living space per dwelling, average number of rooms in a dwelling, average number of persons per dwelling, average number of persons per room. The collected data give the opportunity to analyze the housing satisfaction in our country and to fulfil the strategic goal of the state by solving the housing problem in the means of providing each family with an independent, well-equipped dwelling with sufficient area and a separate room in the dwelling for each family member.
