Summary/Abstract: The New Palace of Warmia Bishops in Frombork, designed by Friedrich August Stüler - a member of the State Construction Commission in Berlin - was opened in 1850. At its core stood a chapel, dominated by an altar dedicated to St. Adalbert, patron saint of the Warmia Diocese. The commission for the altarpiece was given to Heinrich Mücke (1806-1891), a painter of the Düsseldorf School known for his work in the Realist and Historicist styles. Its iconography and composition were further influenced by Ignatz von Olfers, Director-General of the Royal Museums in Berlin. In commissioning the altarpiece, Bishop Joseph Ambrosius Geritz demonstrated his aesthetic sensibilities, honored a tradition of artistic patronage established by his famous predecessors, and expressed his devotion to the patron saint of the diocese - the foundational figure of Christianity in Prussia.
