Railroad Accident in Sveti Petar u Šumi, August 1949 – the End of the Mystery?

Summary/Abstract: Most of the railroad accidents in the former socialist Yugoslavia gained its closure; judicial, scientific and public. However, one of the first major railroad accidents in the socialist Yugoslavia with many casualties, the one in Sveti Petar u Šumi, when 18 persons, mostly children, died in a derailment, is an exception. Due to the lack of archival data and incomplete official version of the event, over the decades, the railway accident in Sveti Petar u Šumi was not a topic of public discussions or scientific analyses. In the last 20 years, testimonies on the 1949 accident began to appear in public; those were the first steps in disclosing the event, which were accompanied by multiple mystifications. Based on newly found archival documents from the Archives of Yugoslavia, this paper aims to give new information and the insight into the details and causes of the accident, as well as the actions of the authorities in the aftermath.
