Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the state of today’s most popular political regime, democracy, in a global context from the perspective of its deterioration. This problem has been observed for two decades, at least. Scholars have produced some theoretical concepts to contribute towards the general knowledge and give remarks on the nature of the regression of democracy in the 21st century. The paper deals with the thesis that S.P. Huntington’s third wave of democratisation can no longer be valid. Today, the world faces the ebb of democratisation. That is why it is interesting to ask about the evaluation of democracy globally to check the level and depth of its existence in political systems of the countries of the world. I would then like to ask what scientific answers are provided on the development of regression trends of democracy. They are analysed in a critical way to find common and diverse explanations of the contemporary regression of democracy. The methods used in this research are: analysis and synthesis of materials, comparison and a qualitative approach.
