The ageless value and topicality of St. Alphonsus de Liguori's equiprobabilism

Summary/Abstract: In theology St. Alphonsus de Liguori is known as the principal exponent of equiprobabilism, a system of principles designed to guide the conscience of one in doubt as to whether he or she is free from or bound by a given law. St. Alphonsus' equiprobabilism has timeless value in resolving moral issues. It grew out of pastoral sensitivity to the concrete problems of human conscience, out of opposition to blind obedience to questionable law, and out of concern for the pursuit of personal and moral maturity. With a strong emphasis on conscience, he argues that God is always very close to human struggles, because man discovers His presence in his conscience, with which he has been equipped to always experience God's presence and to have a point of support and reference in daily choices. Conscience, called practical reason in moral theology, is not only a witness to human actions but also wisdom, prudence, and God's voice in the human heart, which calls him to love and do good and avoid evil (cf. GS 16). Concern for the freedom due to every conscience and for its proper formation leads a person to spiritual growth and ensures harmonious coexistence in the community.
