Summary/Abstract: Social and civic competences are a fundamental element in preparing young people for an active and responsible life in a democratic society. History teaching in secondary school has significant potential to support their de-velopment through the integration of knowledge, skills and values. To fully realize this potential, specific methodological training is necessary for future teachers who know the specifics and requirements for structuring a learning process based on the principles of competency-based teaching. One of the major problems is the lack of study time due to the factographic overload of the history curriculum. But competencies could only be developed if they are based on solid factual knowledge and good technological models for their interpretation and assessment. Logically, this dilemma also raises the ques-tion of reforms in the curriculum that would provide space for discussion, project work, and active learning methods. In perspective, the development of students‘ social and civic competences through the teaching of history and civilizations can be seen as a strategic investment in the civic culture of young generations and in the democratic future of society.
