Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the didactic interpretation of a key issue for national identity and history – acceptance of Christianity and the spread of Slavic writing. It is considered in the context of the changes in the curricula in the Bulgarian school with the Law of 2015 and the adopted synchronic approach to the study of Bulgarian medieval history. For this purpose, a comparative analysis was made between the two generations of history textbooks from 2000 and from 2017. The optimal didactic solutions for the interpretation of this historical material for educational purposes were sought. The analysis carried out brings to the fore the question of whether the chosen synchronous approach, with its indisputable methodological advantages, is the more appropriate option for teaching national history at the junior high school level. Or for the formation of the national identity, the classical, nationally centered, chronological-thematic approach to structuring the educational content is better.
