Summary/Abstract: In the spring of 1848, a revolution broke out in the German states, which pursued the introduction of liberal reforms in the government and the economy and the achievement of national unity. The article examines the course of the revolution in the great German states of Prussia and Austria, as well as the activities of the general German parlia-ment convened in Frankfurt. Special attention is given to the demands and actions of the delegates of the various political formations in the National Assembly in Frankfurt. After serious disagreements and fierce debates in the early 1849, the representatives made impor-tant decisions for the whole nation – a democratic all-German constitution was voted on and a common German ruler was elected. But the Prussian King Friedrich-Wilhelm IV, elected “Emperor of the Germans”, refused the crown, and the monarchs ruling in the individual German states did not recognize the revolutionary constitution and did not put it into effect. As a result, the main goals of the revolution remained unaccomplished.
