Summary/Abstract: This article is an analytical study of the methodological prospects of using feature films, namely biographical films (biopics), the plot of which reflects the life of foreign writers, whose works are introduced in the school curriculum “Foreign Literature”. In order to achieve this goal, this publication analyses monographs and educational and methodological works by leading contemporary Ukrainian methodologists who have developed methods and means of teaching a writer's biography in school literature studies. The result of the analytical review of the methodological material is a generalization of the main methodological principles of studying a writer's biography. First of all, the study of a writer's life should be the first step towards assessing the properties of his or her artistic worldview. The presentation of biographical information is not a chronological list of the artist's life details, but an interesting reference, conversation or lecture. The purpose of a school biography of a writer should be to encourage students to master the writer's creative work by getting to know the key defining facts of his or her biography that directly influenced the formation of his or her inner state, moral and aesthetic preferences. This article also summarizes the methodological research of domestic scholars on the genre classification of biographical data presentation depending on the age category of students. This article provides a historical overview of the formation and development of biographical literature, starting from the Ancient times. Then the basic principles of studying biographical material are analyzed and a list of literary biographies of leading foreign writers whose works are proposed for study in the school course ‘Foreign Literature’ is proposed. As a methodological innovation, the article proposes to use biographical films or biopics with possible demonstration of outstanding footage from them in school classes to get acquainted with the biographical facts of a literary artist. To this end, the author has reviewed critical material on the biopic genre and drawn conclusions about the classification and main genre features. In addition, the article offers a list of biopic films that reflect the life of writers whose works are proposed for study in the school curriculum “Foreign Literature”. The result of this article can be considered a detailed study of methodical material for the study of the writer’s biography in school literary studies, an assessment of the historical path of the literary biography of artists of the artistic word with a list of biographical works, the definition of a biographical film (biopic) is defined, the main genre characteristics are given with the help of a review of research critical literature, proposed biopic films about the life and creative path of writers recommended by the “Foreign Literature” school curriculum. The practical result of the materials of this article can be the use of its provisions in the study of the writer's biography in a specialized school, demonstration of excerpts from films illustrating the life of a literary artist, which, in turn, will improve the quality of education by increasing students' interest in the writer's creative achievements through acquaintance with his inner world, character traits, life decisions, actions and achievements.
