Summary/Abstract: By the end of 2011, the areas holding the status of special economic zones had encompassed nearly 350 towns and villages. Such high popularity of the zones in Poland was tantamount to the abandoning of their original purpose. They have been transformed from the main tool supporting regional development to an important instrument of investment support. Since the very beginning of their operations, special economic zones have had a significant share in absorbing investments carried out by foreign capital in Poland. The aim of the article is thus to present the changing role of special economic zones in attracting direct foreign investments to Poland within the years 2005-2011.
