WHO WAS MARKO LAZAREVIĆ? A CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROSOPOGRAPHY OF ZEMUN’S ENTREPRENEURS IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES

Summary/Abstract: Marko Lazarević was a prominent citizen of Zemun and a benefactor of the Fenek Monastery. His biography has not been researched before. He earned his living as an innkeeper and tavern owner, and also performed several public duties, mainly as a member of the magistrate’s council and as a guardian of orphaned children. He was a literate and patriotic man. As the patron of the first historical poem about the Serbian Uprising, he left a lasting mark on Serbian bibliography – one that has, quite unjustly, fallen into oblivion. Little is known about his private life, except that he had several children and was married more than once. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the prosopography of Zemun by uncovering the identity of Marko Lazarević. In other words, by taking a closer look at the life of one distinguished citizen, the study seeks to provide broader insight into the individuals and events that shaped the economic and social development of Zemun and its surroundings during the 18th and 19th centuries. The research is based on documents from the Historical Archives of Belgrade, specifically the Zemun Magistrate collection. Descriptive and deductive methods were applied in the study.
