Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to find out how the Fenek Monastery, after it was looted, burned and destroyed in 1914, managed its agricultural economy after World War I. The profitability of the monastery’s agricultural economy during 1921 primarily depended on the volume and price of production on the one hand, and the placement of agricultural products on the market on the other. The main market of Fenek was the one in the nearby town of Zemun. At the same time, Zemun was a trading center from which the monastery purchased industrial goods. The key factor in the agroeconomy of Fenek, alongside the buyers and suppliers, was the workforce that served the monastery estate. Documents show that the agricultural production of Fenek depended on the population of the neighboring village of Jakovo. These people were hired laborers, service providers, and sellers of certain agricultural goods on the monastery estate. Therefore, it can be argued that the monastery’s agroeconomy was the driving force that launched economic activity in Jakovo, assuming that the villagers invested the earnings from Fenek in the reconstruction of their war-ravaged property. This earnings were an important, perhaps even the only source of income for the inhabitants of Jakovo, since, as part of the former Austro-Hungarian territory, the village was not entitled to war reparations. Therefore, the agroeconomy of Fenek in 1921, in addition to being crucial for the survival of the monastery itself, also had an extremely significant social role in the post-war reconstruction of this part of Srem.
