Summary/Abstract: Recently Ukraine more often reminds herself in open public debate on the problems of history, historiography and identity. The farther away, of cource not without human casualties, from the political and economic dependence on imperial Moscow becomes much harder “to escape” from her past marked by a continuous ambivalence. In this essay the author tried to touch only some of the problems of representation Transcarpathia in intellectual discourses about Ukraine that are taking place in the world Ukrainian and Rusyn studies after 1991. In the writings of most authors history of the “land with many names” (as Subcarpathian region was called by Ivan Olbracht / Kamil Zeman in 1932) is almost unanimously assimilated and practically built on some myths and stereotypes that for good or for evil forms the exclusivist – Ukrainian based on ethnocentrism vision of history on really multicultural Transcarpathia. An exception is one-two synthesis authored by Natalia Yakovenko, Yaroslav Hrytsak, Andreas Kappeler, Andrew Wilson, Serhy Yekelchyk, Roman Shporluk and Paul Robert Magocsi.
