Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the reactivation of the Metropolitanate of Bessarabia in the context of the geopolitical and identity turmoil of 1990-1992, generated by the collapse of the USSR and the claims of national identity in the Republic of Moldova. Based on official documents and the positions expressed by civil and ecclesiastical authorities, as well as public reactions, the study highlights how the issue of the canonical affiliation of the Church in the Republic of Moldova was politicized and instrumentalized within the framework of broader confrontations of a geopolitical nature. The study offers a historical perspective on the disputes between the Romanian Patriarchate and the Russian Patriarchate, emphasizing the political-religious transformations that followed the collapse of the USSR. The steps taken by the Bessarabian clergy and intelligentsia to restore ecclesial ties with the Mother Church, the reactions of state institutions in Chisinau, as well as the opposition of the Russian Patriarchate, which perceived these actions as a threat to its own canonical jurisdiction, are detailed. The work highlights the deeply political nature of the church conflict and its lasting impact on religious life in the Republic of Moldova.
