Summary/Abstract: The ascension of Mikhail Gorbachev to the leadership of the Soviet Union on March 11, 1985 marked a significant change in the trajectory of socio-political, economic and religious life in the USSR. His ambitious reforms, known as glasnost (openness/transparency) and perestroika (restructuring), aimed to revitalize and democratize the stagnant structures of the Soviet state. However, while the intentions were for modernization and openness, these policies unexpectedly accelerated latent tensions and dissensions, causing the collapse and, ultimately, the dissolution of the Soviet empire. This tumultuous process was not only the end of an era, but also the beginning of a complex period of political, economic and social reconfiguration for both Russia and the post-Soviet states. Despite its often painful consequences, it paved the way for a new world order and laid the foundations for the transformations of the 21st century. With the national emancipation movement, which began actively in the MSSR in 1988, church life will also enter a new path. National emancipation will also produce a religious revival.
