Summary/Abstract: Jelcz-Laskowice is a ”young” city that has existed for twenty years. The city came into existence as a result of joining of two villages, which even today can be easily seen in its functional structure and spatial planning. Jelcz- Laskowice has fifteen thousand inhabitants, is located twenty five and a half kilometre away from Wrocław and remains in its shadow. Basing on two pieces of research on inhabitants’ attitudes towards the new city, carried out by Professor Bagiński in 1989 and then again in 1992, as well as on a survey conducted by the author of this text, we can come to a conclusion that in the city: - there is lack of well organised public places and a city centre, - there is lack of sports and recreation centres as well as entertainment facilities, especially for teenagers, - some basic services are good, - a sense of security has increased, there are less signs of pathology, - nowadays inhabitants mostly complain about the nuisance caused by heavy traffic (street nosie, squalid roads).
