ДО ІСТОРІЇ „ШЕВЧЕНКОВОГО” СЛОВА ПЕРЕБÉНДЯ ‛ВЕРЕДУН’
ON THE ORIGIN OF THE „SHEVCHENKO’S” WORD ПЕРЕБЕНДЯ – MEANING ‘CAPRICIOUS'

Summary/Abstract: The article highlights the origin of the noun перебендя ‘capricious’, which in the Ukrainian literarylanguage has the connotation of Shevchenko’s word. An analysis of the material allowed the authorto conclude that the Polish Latinism prebenda entered the spoken Ukrainian language in the late 17thand early 18th centuries and subsequent derivatives can be grouped as Western Ukrainian and EasternUkrainian. A common feature of the Western Ukrainian words is determined by the derivative char-acter of the Galician перебенджувати ‘do it out of spite’ and Podollian перебендювати ‘to joke;to talk; to be capricious’ verbs derived from the noun forms перебенда ‘a joke; a conversation’ / наперебенді ‘for conversations’, the West Volyn verb вибандювати ‘to be capricious’ is a hypericform of the Podillia verb. In the Eastern Ukrainian subdialects, the Podillia verb перебендювати‘to be capricious’ was perceived as local, because the form does not have the alternation of the den-tal consonant in the stem of the verb. Here, the verb became the creative basis for the actually East-ern Ukrainian verb noun to denote a being перебендя ‘capricious’, which that reflects the poetictext of Taras Shevchenko.
