Summary/Abstract: The author analyses The Milk of Sorrow (La teta asustada, 2009), directed by Claudia Llosa, focusing on the key problem of expressing trauma related to the experience of rape during the internal armed conflict in Peru in 1980- -2000. Llosa’s work is treated as an attempt to search for her own language of representation of sexual violence against women, embedded in a specific socio-cultural context. In telling about the causes of trauma, the director moves away from images of violence in favour of songs in Quechua. Presenting the consequences of traumatic experiences for the next generation, she refers to the Andean concept of suffering transmitted in mother’s milk. The article presents problems of Peruvian cinema that have not been discussed in Polish film studies, embedded in socio-political and cultural contexts necessary for the interpretation of Llosa’s film.
