Summary/Abstract: The Villa Regia (Casimir Palace) was, until now, one of the least researched elements of the Vasa residential complex in Warsaw. Examinations of the Vistula riverbed carried out during the last decade, which resulted in the discovery of more than 20 tonnes of stone architectural details and sculptural elements, as well as architectural and archaeological research on the preserved sections of the building, allowed for a signifi cant correction of previous findings regarding its original form. Awareness of the building’s original shape, in turn, made it possible to place it in the broader context of the residential architecture of the Commonwealth and Europe in the first half of the 17th century. It has also become possible to make a preliminary attribution of the design and to search for sources of inspiration for particular functional solutions and decorative motifs existing in the royal villa.
