The 1655 brandskatt of the suburbs of Old Warsaw: An unknown source for the history of the early modern city

Summary/Abstract: Discovered in the repository of Stockholm’s Riksarkivet, the source is the first known register of the so-called brandskatt from the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It dates back to the outset of Old Warsaw’s occupation by the Swedish army (1655). Together with other tax registers and Adam Jarzębski’s Gościniec (1643), it allows us to expand the scope of studies on the Swedish system of emergency taxes, and to verify the location of properties in the suburbs of the early modern city.
