AN EVALUATION OF THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN TERMS OF THREE STYLES OF POLITICS

Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman Empire showed a cosmopolitan structure in terms of social structure as well as cultural aspects. Yusuf Akçura addressed his famous article titled Üç Tarz-ı Siyaset in terms of its applicability to the social structure formed by this cosmopolitan structure. In his analysis, Yusuf Akçura claimed that the social structure of the society did not allow the formation of an Ottomanist nation due to the idea of nationalism, and that the ideas of Islamism based on the understanding of religious unity could not be implemented as a policy due to deep differences in the social structure as well as external obstacles. In the last stage of Üç Tarzı Siyaset, the idea of Turkism was brought to the forefront as the idea of establishing a nation state consisting of Turks, who are the founding element of the contemporary solution.
