Summary/Abstract: The aim of the conducted experimental research was to demonstrate the effectiveness of developing the ability to assess data usefulness among students in the first stage of education (considered as the dependent variable) under the influence of introducing inquiry-based learning as a method of working with children (considered as the independent variable). The research problem took the form of the question: to what extent (weak, moderate, strong) will teaching utilizing IBSE affect the level of ability to assess data usefulness among the pupils in elementary education? The following hypothesis was posed in the research: among students in the first stage of education subjected to teaching based on the IBSE methodology, there will be a significant increase in the ability to assess data usefulness, that is, detecting unnecessary data that is not required to solve a specific task and evaluating the data needed to solve it. The dependent variable was measured twice among 200 second-grade students from primary schools in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship who were enrolled in the project: “Child as a Researcher”. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant moderate increase in the skill of assessing data usefulness among the surveyed pupils. Meanwhile, qualitative analysis showed that the basis for the increase in the skill of identifying important and missing data should be sought in the development of cognitive processes (attention, memory, thinking), in the development of effective action strategies, as well as in cultivating habits of self-control, self-correction, and reflection before making decisions.
