Summary/Abstract: In 2023, the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences commemorated the dual anniversary of Karel Maydl, a prominent surgeon and professor at the Czech medical faculty in Prague. Born on March 10, 1853, in Rokytnice nad Jizerou, Maydl's career was marked by significant achievements despite his early death at fifty. After earning his medical degree in 1876, he worked under Professor Eduard Albert in Innsbruck and later in Vienna, where he became known for his contributions to modern surgical techniques and antisepsis. In 1891, Maydl was appointed as a professor and head of the surgical clinic at the Czech university in Prague, where he introduced innovative practices such as the use of X-rays and the inclusion of women in medical studies. His work in Prague significantly advanced Czech surgery and medical education. Maydl's legacy is preserved through numerous archival materials, including personal documents, professional writings, and correspondence, housed at the Masaryk Institute and other institutions. His contributions to surgery, particularly in neuro, urological, and abdominal surgery, were internationally recognized. Maydl's dedication to his profession and his innovative spirit continue to inspire future generations of surgeons. He passed away on August 8, 1903, and is remembered as a pioneer of modern Czech surgery.
