Summary/Abstract: The present paper traces the main dimensions of youth economic policies during the socialist period, emphasizing the urban-rural relationship. The main premise of the study is that, despite the real efforts undertaken by the socialist regime to urbanize Romania, it failed to attract enough young people to rural areas. More often, it was the very policies of urbanization and urban-led development of the countryside that produced this kind of outcome. In short, the authorities have failed in convincing the young people about the development opportunities in rural areas, despite complex, rather than rhetorical, strategies to do so. The result has been that young people have sought, as far as possible, to build a future for themselves outside rural areas, even though this has been offered in abundance, both ideologically and propagandistically and through substantial public policies, undertaken by the authorities.
