Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the State Institute of Special Pedagogy (SISP)in Warsaw in 1922 provided an opportunity to train special schoolteachers. Maria Grzegorzewska, the Institute’s first director, aimedto select teaching staff who would guarantee comprehensive prepa-ration of individuals interested in working with children with disabili-ties. When recommending candidates to the ministry, Grzegorzewskaprioritized individuals with not only theoretical knowledge but alsopractical experience and expertise in their respective fields.This article aims to profile four SISP lecturers who taught subjectsrelated to the education of children with intellectual disabilities:Władysław Sterling, Michał Wawrzynowski, Halina Jankowska, andWitold Łuniewski. In researching this article, methods typical of thehistory of education and social sciences were used. The achievementsof these lecturers are described with particular emphasis on theirwork at SISP, utilizing materials preserved in the State Archives inWarsaw, Branch in Milanówek. Through the presentation of their ac-tivities, the article highlights the significance Grzegorzewska placedon teachers possessing extensive experience in working with childrenand youth.
