Between Chéri and Curtezana. Reflections on the Act of Translation)

Summary/Abstract: Of the fifty-six texts written by Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, only six have been translated into Romanian: The Vagabond, Duo, Chéri, The End of Chéri, Sido and The Tendrils of the Vine. Despite this, the novel Chéri was translated twice. The first translation, from 1973, made by Mona Rădulescu and Corneliu Rădulescu, includes the translation of both texts, the novel Chéri and its sequel, The End of Chéri. The second translation, made by Nicoleta Neagoe, opts only for the novel Chéri. Furthermore, this edition appears after the 2009 screen adaptation of the novel, being, in fact, a revival of the text that was the basis of the film. Right from the beginning, a relevant detail is noted. The translators opted for different versions of the title. The 1973 version, Chéri, keeps the name of the original text, while the 2009 version, Curtezana, chooses a denomination that characterizes the female character. Starting from the two variants, having the original French text at our disposal, we will consider some of the main differences that appear from one edition to another, we will exemplify them and we will see how the translated text acquires divergent nuances, departing more or less from the original novel.
