Summary/Abstract: The author deals with the origin of his translation of Petrarch's sonnet »Movesi 'l vecchierel canuto e bianco« which started as a seminar exercise in 1962. He analyses his four translated versions of the poem from a linguistic, lexical, stylistic, metric, and rhyming scheme point ov view. He proceeds discussing the obsolescence of the translation and the share of self-criticism in the process of translation. The translated versions from 1962, 1982, 1995 and 1996 indicate increasing critical rigour concerning the hendecasyllabic meter and rhyming which has matched Petrarch's rhyroing scheme only in 1996 in the quadruple rhyme in the quatrains. He considers such rhyming desirable, even indispensable, in translations of sonnets from Romance languages as the sonnet does not function properly without the identical rhyme in the first two stanzas.
