Based on theoretical analysis and the results of the survey, the article describes the importance of social participation for a disabled person, focusing on problem solving “here and now.” Aim of the article: on the basis of theoretical analysis and the results of the survey to reveal the importance of social participation for a disabled person and to describe theoretical and practical preconditions of a social career. The theoretical part is based on methodological concepts and findings of research conducted by Bell (2003), Berger and Luckmann (1999), Ruškus, Mažeikis (2007). The interpretation of the results emphasizes the imbalance of the family and the organization as the closest environment, which can affect a social career development of a mentally disabled person. Summing up, the importance of social competence of all members of the community has been highlighted. Preparing the article, quantitative and qualitative research strategies have been employed and the following research methods have been used: scholastic literature and document analysis, meta-analysis, a survey in writing, statistical analysis of data. Interpretative analysis has been performed on the basis of social (education, psychology, sociology, management, social work) theories systematically describing the phenomenon under investigation
