Summary/Abstract: The notion of the linguistic worldview (LWV) has been extremely popular in Polish (and Slavic) linguistics and literary studies. Nevertheless, to date, an LWV-oriented approach to (literary) translation has not been widely implemented in Polish translation studies (TS). Moreover, two major studies on the topic (Pieciul-Karmińska 2007, Gicala 2018) do not provide coherent qualitative or quantitative guidelines, which could help TS scholars apply such a methodology effectively. This article presents the steps taken to elaborate a cognitive definition of śmierć (death), which serves as the starting point for translation analyses. Firstly, I overview the current state of the art and present Gicala’s LWV-oriented translation model (2018). Then, I highlight the challenges (and possible solutions) I faced when choosing the sources to develop the cognitive definition of the Polish śmierć (death). Finally, I present the definition in its preliminary version.
