Summary/Abstract: The weekly supplement “Życie i Kultura”, published from 1956 to 1957 in “Głos Szczeciński”, the press organ of the Polish United Workers’ Party (KW PZPR) in Szczecin, is an important source for understanding the social and political conditions of Szczecin’s artistic life. It also serves as evidence of the activities of certain community groups (journalists and artistic circles) in shaping the regional cultural identity. The article’s aim is to fill a research gap related to the presence of artistic critique in this periodical. In the second part of the study, critiques of visual arts, music, and entertainment in the aforementioned periodical are presented in two eras: the era of socialist realism when it was dominated by cultural policy guidelines, and in the initial phase of what was known as the „spirit of renewal,” which foreshadowed cultural liberalization.
