Summary/Abstract: Published between 1956 and 1957, the weekly supplement Life and Culture in the Głos Szczeciński, the news arm of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) Central Committee in Szczecin, is an important source of social and political conditions in the artistic life of Szczecin, a testimony to the activity of certain groups in the community (columnists and the artistic milieu) in the creation of regional cultural identity. The article aims to fill a research gap regarding the presence of art criticism in the periodical’s pages. The first part of the study introduces theater criticism in the pages of the periodical in two periods: socialist realism, when it was subject to the domination of cultural policy guidelines, and the first phase of the so-called spirit of renewal, which heralded the liberalization of culture.
